Profiles in Courage

This post is about Profiles in Courage.   Way back when I was younger, John F. Kennedy wrote a book “Profiles in Courage”.   It cost .35 cents back then.  It was an inspiring book that I read at age 12.

Profiles In Courage
At .35 in 1961 – It was an easy read also for an 11-12 year old.

What we see now

We don’t see much courage now in the Republican party.  They belly flop and kiss Mr Piggy’s arse.   About 60+% of the citizens in the United States find this behavior sicken.  Some say “weird”, I say they lack courage to stand up to a bully.  I am a fan of Star Wars.  The cartoons like Star Wars Rebels had a great quote from Ezer Bridger “If we don’t stand against them, who will?”

Courage

Courage (also called bravery, valour) is the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Valor is courage or bravery, especially in battle.  Physical courage is bravery in the face of physical pain, hardship, even death, or threat of death; while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, discouragement, or personal loss.

Courage
Hey what is one of my post without some nice art work. God Speed is a painting by British artist Edmund Leighton, depicting an armored knight departing to war and leaving his beloved.

Virtue

The classical virtue of fortitude (andreia, fortitudo) is also translated as “courage”, but includes the aspects of perseverance and patience. In the Western traditions, notable thoughts on courage have come from philosophers Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Kierkegaard, as well as Christian beliefs and texts.  Also in  Hindu traditions and mythology there are many examples of bravery, valor, and courage, with examples of both physical and moral courage exemplified.  Likewise in the Eastern tradition, the Chinese text Tao Te Ching offers a great deal of thoughts on courage, both physical and moral.  Yes, I have read the Tao Te Ching.  A very inspiring book.  In doing my ancestry, I found I had many ancestors who had a great deal of courage.  Some stood up to power and got burned at the stake or lost their heads.

So there you have it about Courage

Courage is lacking now in certain groups of the United States.  They are not standing up to bully who has taken over the republican party.  What will your legacy be?  Will you stand up to a bully who wants to destroy our government?  Democracies in the past failed due to greed and dark triad types.   History tell us this!  We see it in present day Russia.  Dark Triad types use humiliation and tough bulling talk.  They use lies and disinformation as tools to control the citizens.

John F. Kennedy would be proud of Joseph R. Biden for the courage to step down.  He realized he did not have the MOJO to beat the bully.   Many of us are proud of Joe for his tough decision.  I am also proud to see how Kamala Harris has stepped up to fill the spot.   Thus I will be watching the democratic convention.   Yes, I will vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.  They have something Mr Piggy will never have, they have great resumes of public service and lots of courage.
