About AI

The question per Mickey Mellon.  Who will reap the value of AI?  This post is about AI, known as Artificial Intelligence.

My reply on LinkedIn

Nobody – because when everyone uses it to write – the writing will become boring and redundant. When it is used to do engineering – AI came up with a bi-wing jet in early versions. AI works by having a large database. If your database has junk in it. The AI will produce junk over time.  Generally, most AI programs search the internet or their own database which may or may not give the correct answers.

My Experience with using AI concepts

I wrote a program in 1990 after reading a Book Called the 5th generation. I used it to write a COBOL program to read a file from a vendor.  Consequently, it broke the file into a file for each company under the Southern Company.  It generated a 13,000+ line program. I tested it and had it ready in two weeks.  My co-workers stopped talking to me. I got a mediocre review by my manager for the project.

My next projects using my AI tools

Later, on another project in 2001. I used the same program to write five programs to convert IBM comp-3 (packed numbers) to numbers.  This was done so we could load into an Oracle data base as we converted over to PeopleSoft data base.  Evidently, the people at the company, my co-workers and project manager were scared and I was removed from the project.  In 2009, I used similar technology in SQL to find tables that could scan a database and update statistics. Same result from co-workers.  I used the same tech in 2016 to rebrand a company to a new name. Guess what same reaction!

In Summary, most people are threaten by AI technology.

From MY AI Program
* Program Description: *
Program to create Program code to generate a Cobol Program *
from a Configuration file report/processing Cobol program. *
This was part of a system I was working on in 1989-1990 as an *
Artificial Intelligent system to generate report and/or *
Processing program(s). I will copying my old program and *
converting it to run on either a SQL server or Oracle database*
At the same time I will be figuring out how to setup the *
artificial intelligence part to wire up the program. I will *
also use the old PeopleSoft drivers to setup database I/O *
my Goal is to develop a system the Japanese failed to do *
in their 5th generation project and others have failed to do *
since. Why COBOL? It is a trade off between best logic, *
best character processing and best math processing. *

Mickey used a quote from this book.  Poor Charlie’s Almanack: The Essential Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger.

“And he knew that the huge productivity increases that would come from a better machine introduced into the production of a commodity product would all go to the benefit of the buyers of the textiles. Nothing was going to stick to our ribs as owners.”
